The remote Finse station is located 1,222 meters above sea level on the Hardangervidda plateau and is accessible only by train, making it the highest (and most isolated) train station in Scandinavia.
Due to its altitude, harsh climate, and proximity to the massive Hardangerjøkulen glacier, Finse has been used for over a century as a training ground by legendary polar explorers, including Fridtjof Nansen, Roald Amundsen, Ernest Shackleton, and Robert Falcon Scott.
This combination of altitude, cold, and glacial landscape also makes Finse an ideal place to prepare for a polar expedition. The perfect training ground for the upcoming research expedition, The Greenland Project.
One key difference: In Greenland, we should have plenty of light, whereas in Finse, the deep winter darkness often made conditions even more challenging. In hindsight, Finse sometimes had more extreme conditions than the eternal ice of Greenland.
